The summertime style checklist

We’re sketching out ways to enjoy a more stylish everyday this summer.

As we begin to re-emerge into the ‘outside world’, it’s time to inject some feel-good sunshine vibes back into our day-to-day style. So, whether you’re starting back at work, heading to the shops (Selfridges first on the list, right?) or taking a day trip to the seaside, we’ll have you looking – and feeling – ready to take on the world in style.

Make it office-appropriate

Prepping for a return to work or tired of your WFH hoodies and trackie b’s? Switch up the loungewear in favour of something a little more polished and fun. We’re looking to bold blazers and matching trousers or a mini dress to bring back some much-needed elegance into our lives and give us a confidence boost for the office. Our motto? Dress smart, work smart.

Dress to be seen (again!)

As the shops reopen their doors again (hallelujah!), it’s the perfect excuse to show off some new summertime threads. You can never go wrong with denim – we love AGOLDE’s mid-rise jeans faded jeans, worn with a plain white tee and cream cardi, à la early-90s Gwynnie. Simple, effortless and cool – consider this your new-normal daytime uniform.

Denim is definitely a key staple in my day-to-day uniform. The hunt for a new, perfect pair of jeans can be daunting, but once you’ve found your shape, you’re good to go! I recommend learning your measurements for fearless online shopping.

Take a stylish day trip

OK, so we’re not quite jetting off to tropical climes just yet, but we say embrace the feel-good vacation vibe with colour-pop bikinis courtesy of Billabong or a swishy skirt and peasant top from Rixo. Ideal for day trips to the beach, sunbathing in the park or getting ready for that holiday (well, a girl can dream, right?) – just add some shades, a chilled glass of rosé and you could (almost) be in the South of France.

Make an (alfresco) occasion of it

With outdoor (social-distanced) socialising back on the agenda, dressing up for the occasion has never felt more fun. Go all-out in a standout animal-print dress and heels (because, why not?), or opt for a versatile one-piece or high-rise leather shorts and an off-the-shoulder top that are comfy enough for a leisurely picnic in the park. Slick back those unruly locks, add a pop of lipstick and revel in the joy of dressing up again.

I’m enjoying wearing dresses at home after cooking a special dinner – they have to [be] long, feminine and have a rich, beautiful colour. Right now, I’m pairing the dress with flat, casual sandals or slippers and very little make-up!

- Jeannie Lee, Selfridges Head of Buying

Our Head of Buying, Jeannie Lee’s top tips for a virtual date-night or dinner-party look:

1) Go for a relaxed-fit outfit in anticipation of a long night in (whether that’s with your housemates or via Skype).
2) Have fun with your look – after all, there aren’t many opportunities to dress up these days.
3) Remember: lighting is everything – use it to work in your favour!

Make it a wardrobe HIIT

Lockdown lifestyles have seen some of us (ahem!) taking to the Zoom exercise routines with the zeal of a Tokyo 2020 contender in training. Squat in style with some statement activewear, such as Koral’s shiny shorts and FP Movement's crop top, or a vest and camo leggings that you can wear to the park and beyond – because, let’s face it, you’ll probably end up wearing them all day.
