8 ways to dress between the seasons

From trench coats to tailoring, here’s our fashion editor’s guide to outsmarting the weather.

Getting dressed can be a tricky art to master when the weather is in a constant state of flux. Rain one minute, blue skies the next. Luckily, there are a few key pieces that can see you through that awkward-in-between phase without having to compromise on style. From Burberry trench coats to wear-anywhere dresses, read on for eight ways to make the morning dressing dilemma a total breeze.

1. Find your perfect jeans

1. Find your perfect jeans

Fashion is fleeting, jeans are forever (and always). That was the message at Bottega Veneta’s SS23 show, where Kate Moss set social media alight in a low-rise pair that had us all dreaming about our perfect fit. Enter: Frame Denim, a brand that has honed the art of timeless jeans. Or, if you’re in the mood for experimenting, check out Litkovska, a brand that reinvents the classics with patchwork panels and frayed finishes.

2. Invest in a timeless trench coat

Trench coats appear in every transeasonal edit because of their infinite versatility. A natural ally of casual classics such as jeans and knitwear, they look just as good over tailoring, too. If you’re a fan of minimalist style, look no further than Scandi brand Meotine’s black trench coat. And you can never go wrong with an original by Burberry.

3. Sole searching? Super flats are here to stay

3. Sole searching? Super flats are here to stay

While it’s been fun dancing with danger in towering platforms, this season’s breakout shoes are keeping us firmly on the ground. It was all “Hail Mary Janes!” at Prada. Meanwhile, Miu Miu singlehandedly brought back ballet flats: just as versatile as they were in the 00s. Jimmy Choo’s take on the style will look elegant with denim, but complement sharp tailoring, too.

4. Pick one dress to rule them all

Midi dresses are the unsung heroes of transeasonal dressing. Take any one of Reformation’s day dresses as proof: their easy-wearing silhouette and ability to feel both smart and casual make them the sort of trophy number you grab when you’re in a hurry and need to look pulled together despite what Mother Nature – or life – throws.

5. Consider a decade-defying bag

5. Consider a decade-defying bag

Yes, the do-everything bag is officially back and, aside from their practical proportions, this season’s styles pack plenty of design clout: you’ll carry them everywhere, with everything, all of the time. Bottega Veneta’s impeccably made Intrecciato bags are a perfect example. The same applies to Lemaire’s answer to baguette bags, the Croissant, which lives up to its name with a pillowy crescent shape, sliced from buttery-soft leather.

6. Suit yourself in laidback tailoring

Suits are packing a sartorial one-two punch this season. As well as being minimalist enough to conquer most dress codes, they’re comfortable too: blazers with relaxed fits or boxy proportions, paired with wide-leg trousers that feel fresh and fun, rather than formal. For a cut above the rest, look to Jil Sander. The brand’s power-shouldered two-piece look effortlessly put-together no matter what.

7. Wear earth-conscious jewellery classics

7. Wear earth-conscious jewellery classics

Sometimes, the simplest of pieces are the best investments. A pair of vintage studs by Jennifer Gibson, or lab-grown diamond ring by Jennifer Vrai, are just as much of a fashion foundation piece as the perfect jeans or simple white T-shirt. Discreet, but completely capable of taking outfits to new heights.

8. Say goodbye to the thigh-highs (for now)

What goes up must come down. An antidote to the recent rise in micro-mini skirts, across the SS23 runways hemlines dropped to knee-grazing and floor-sweeping lengths. This season’s versions are close to the skin and come in lightweight fabrics that are easy to layer. Max Mara’s is easy to dress up (or down), while Reformation’s terracotta midi will add a bit of colour to even the glummest of days.
