A Bathing Ape, also known as BAPE, was founded in Tokyo in 1993 by Nigo. As a fan of 20th-century pop culture, Nigo named the brand after his love of the Planet of the Apes films using the Japanese proverb, A bathing monkey in lukewarm water". It references the indulgence of staying in a bath for so long that the water cools down.
