Samaroli is a curious name for an Islay whisky. But then, Silvano S Samaroli was a curious figure in whisky-making – in 1968 the Italian founded his spirits merchant in Rome and shortly became the first non-British independent Scotch whisky bottler. He was a pioneer of no-age-statement whiskies like this 1997 Bowmore 25-year-old single-malt Scotch whisky that reminds us of an Islay past with its peaty aromas of medicine and iodine, and a palate of toasted wood and charcoal.
