Paris, 1937, the World Fair. Alvar Aalto is awarded the top prize for his vase, an asymmetric, wavy hymn to the lakes of his Finnish hometown. That vase—this vase—is no less arresting today, nearly 100 years on. Each piece is mouthblown in Finland, then hand-cut before going through several polishings at the iittala glass factory.
