Alexander II of Russia’s sommelier first reached out to Louis Roederer to ask the Maison to create a special champagne for the Tsar—one that expressed the pinnacle of quality. With full control over its vineyards, the Maison knew exactly which parcels to choose from, and so Cristal was born. To soothe the Tsar’s assassination paranoia it was made from clear crystal and shaped with a flat punt so bombs couldn’t be hidden inside. Though the 2000 Vinothèque has spent two decades in slumber, it’s tongue-tinglingly fresh thanks to its recent disgorgement.
