Take a detour outside Monforte d'Alba in Italy’s Piedmont region and you’ll come across Giacomo Conterno. What started out as a small tavern set up by the estate’s founder Giovanni Conterno in 1908 is now a domaine that covers almost 100 hectares and is renowned for its Barolo Riserva Monfortino. Blended from Nebbiolo grapes which are then aged in oak casks for seven years, it marries red berries and perfumed rose with earthy truffle and leather notes.
