Wedding gifts

 Words: Gemma Steele

The absence of a wedding gift registry can send many of us into a frenzied panic. What do the couple want? What do they need? Do people still use fondue sets? But, although searching for the perfect gift can be a mission, finding and giving it is a joy. From cherished keepsakes to indulgent sweet treats, we’ve rounded up our top 10 wedding gifts.

1. Drink it in

Wine Case, All Things Pink mixed wine case, £125

The wedding itself is the pinnacle of celebrations, but the congratulatory drinks, toasts and revelry is likely to continue long after the confetti has settled. This case contains six bottles of sparkling and still rosé wine from different suppliers and vineyards, each carefully selected for their soil quality, provenance and, of course, flavour. From crisp and floral Sancerre, to a complex and buttery Chardonnay, the selection is sure to facilitate many a ‘cheers’.

2. That warm feeling

Johnstons, Basket-weave jacquard wool and cashmere throw, £550

Luxurious and super-soft, this throw is made with merino wool from Australia, a provenance renowned for fine-textured, strong and insulated wool. It is also made with 10% cashmere produced from long, lofty fibres from Mongolia, making the blanket irresistibly soft. Your friends may already have a throw on their sofa, but they’re unlikely to have one quite as special as this.

3. Raise a glass

Stories of Italy, Macchia mouth-blown glass tumblers set, £525

A colourful take on the tradition of buying a set of glasses as a wedding gift, this set of six tumblers is made using a technique inspired by Murano glass. Hand-blowing their glass in Milan, Stories of Italy combines traditional Italian craft with modern design and maximalist colour to create their vibrant, timeless pieces. The colours of this set will meld seamlessly with every tableware aesthetic and complement a home’s existing collections.

4. Felled in love

Goldfinger, Grained limited-edition upcycled-wood bowl, £190

Making use of wood which would otherwise be destroyed or burnt, this bowl is part of an exclusive collaboration between Selfridges and woodworkers Goldfinger. Ensuring the origin of the wood is appreciated and remembered, each bowl is engraved with the coordinates of where its tree stood before it was felled, making something beautiful out of something unfortunate.

5. To the happy coupe

Helle Mardahl Studio, Bon Bon Cocktail mouth-blown glass, £282

Avoiding the classic “what are we going to do with three blenders” issue, each Helle Mardahl coupe glass is produced in limited quantities and made by hand, meaning no two pieces are the same. The sweet-inspired collection is hand-blown, creating organic and sculptural shapes in vibrant ice cream hues. There are also vases, bowls and cake pedestals in the range, so your gift could kickstart a collecting venture.

6. How sweet

Artisan du Chocolat, Voyage de Chocolats, £55

Handcrafting their chocolates in the Kent countryside, Artisan du Chocolat make fine chocolate even more special. Packaged in a box inspired by vintage luggage, the rich and indulgent selection includes salted caramels, truffles and chocolates filled with unusual, intriguing ganache flavours.

7. Aisle archives

Marmor Paperie, Stone-marbled album, £59

A present with a purpose will always be appreciated. Containing 20 sturdy pages separated with glassine sheets, this photo album will turn their wedding photos into a cherished keepsake. One of only 10 remaining professional UK marblers, London paper house Marmor Paperie wants to take marbling away from mass-production and return it to its quality workmanship roots. Every marbled cover is unique, and they use acrylic paint which achieves more vibrancy than digital printing.

8. Sparks fly

Moro Dabron, Of Gardens twin-handle scented candle, £155

The beauty of this candle from Moro Dabron is that even when the 70 hours of burn time are up, recipients are left with a stone vase to keep. Led by a love of romantic interiors, Moro Dabron created this candle as an ode to a Francis Bacon essay about garden flowers. The candle is scented with notes of bergamot, jasmine, tuberose and orange blossom, creating a fragrance that is fresh, heady and floral, much like a wedding bouquet.

9. Hot and steamy

La Pavoni, Esperto Abile espresso coffee machine, £1350

A gift that will quickly become embedded in their morning ritual, this coffee machine from La Pavoni uses a manual lever to produce the perfect espresso. Created for true coffee aficionados, the design allows constant monitoring of brewing pressure, so the crema and strength of the espresso can be shaped by the preferences of each user. Long, slow post-wedding mornings of coffee in bed can’t last forever, but their signature espressos can certainly continue.

10. Eat your heart out

Selfridges, Congratulations hamper, £100

The confetti is cleared, the wedding cake is finished, but this hamper is all about continuing the celebrations. Indulgent, delicious and packaged in a keepsake wicker picnic basket, it includes Selfridges chocolate, prosecco, buttery shortbread, truffles, wine and a champagne-infused jam. Schedule delivery to coincide with the return from their honeymoon for an unexpected pick-me-up.
