Calling all beauty fans: Rouge Hermès – the make-up collection devoted to lips – has arrived at Selfridges! Renowned for its legacy in creating beautiful clothing and accessories for almost 200 years, the luxury French brand has poured the same craftmanship, style and attention to detail into its make-up. Shop the collection now and read our Beauty Editor Grace Gargini’s run-through of what you need to know about the collection (and why we’re already obsessed).

THE UNMISTAKABLE CRAFTSMANSHIP

I’m not ashamed to admit a tiny squeal of joy was released when I opened a recent delivery and saw the iconic Hermès orange box fall out (and let me tell you, I’ve seen a lot of products in my day). The whole un-boxing process is a treat – from the canvas pouch that protects each lipstick to the expertly crafted lacquered and brushed metal case that twists to unveil the Hermès logo embossed on the top of each lipstick. They’re like little keepsake works of art. This sense of craftmanship runs through the whole collection and the lipsticks come in refillable shades so you can simply swap in and out when finished to reduce the need for excess packaging. Et voilà!

As artisans we are dedicated to the beauty of useful objects. With Hermès Beauty, we are engaged in a creative production process with the same insistence on quality as for all our objects. But beyond its use, it should be an object that gives incredible pleasure.

– Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director

THE LUXURIOUS FORMULAS

Once unboxed, I’m pleased to reveal what’s inside does not disappoint. The lipsticks come in a matte and satin formula, both of which deliver strong pigment but provide a different finish. Satin offers a rich, vibrant colour with a slight sheen for long-lasting colour that still moisturises. But the star of the show, for me, is the matte lipstick – it packs a real punch in the colour department with a buttery-velvet finish, yet it still feels really lightweight. I wore the shade 46 Rouge Exotique (a hot orangey-red) on back-to-back calls last week without any need for touch-ups. I even forgot I was wearing it after a few hours (the ultimate matte lipstick test, if you ask me). And if bold reds aren’t your thing, you’re sure to find a colour for you with their range of everyday nudes, plums, pinks and classic reds.

THE PERFECT PARTNERS

In addition to the brand’s classic Rouge Hermès lipsticks, they have a few more tricks up their sleeve. First up are the limited-edition collections, of which there are two a year – and which can sell out in days. The AW20 collection is all about the colour pink, with three rosy-hued shades that come in colourful limited-edition packaging. I’ve also got my eye on a few of the sister products from the range, which include a handcrafted Lip Brush (made by artisans in France, it looks like something from a Film Noir set), the ultra-rich (and ultra-indulgent) Lip Care Balm and Universal Lip Pencil, which is a colourless pencil that cleverly lines the lips, preps it for lipstick to follow and keeps colour on for longer.
