Montsecano is a joint venture between photographer Juilo Donoso and Alsatian winemaker Andre Ostertag in Casablanca. Their first harvest was in 2008 and they produced only 387 bottles of the Montsecano Pinot Noir. Since then, production has increased ever so slightly and vineyard and winemaking has become more refined. The granite soils here are older than those of the Andes, and the density of plantings is around 7000 vines/hectare. Native trees remain planted in between some of the rows of vines, to minimise disruption to the land. This expression of Pinot Noir is wonderfully fresh, avoiding the over ripe character found in so many from Chile. Showing notes of red cherry, gentle spiciness and an earthy finish, this is extremely elegant and easy drinking.
