The house Krug is renowned for its complex vintage varieties—sometimes blending up to 120 wines to create the final bottling—but the Clos du Mesnil brut blanc de blancs takes a different route to palatable perfection. It explores “the purity of a single plot of chardonnay from a single year”; 2004 is harvested from a legendary vineyard protected by stone walls since 1698 and, though it spans only 1.84 hectares, it’s one of the most celebrated villages for chardonnay in the Champagne. On the nose is toffee apple, caramel, citrus and toasted nuts.
