the capsule wardrobe, reinvented

To celebrate the launch of WARDROBE.NYC at Selfridges, we dive deep into the brand’s thematic capsule collections that work all year round.

As frequent attendees at fashion weeks across the globe for several years, VOGUE Australia’s Fashion Director Christine Centenera and streetwear designer Josh Goot started to wonder why luxury fashion is so often out of touch with our everyday lives. Seeking an alternative to the excess and noise of the current fashion system, the pair combined their expertise to launch unisex label WARDROBE.NYC.

Taking the much-referenced concept of a ‘capsule wardrobe’, Centenera and Goot have reinvented this approach to dressing for the sustainability-conscious era. Whereas short-lived fashion trends have a significant negative impact on the planet, WARDROBE.NYC’s ethos lies in consuming less and buying better, and mix-and-match collections are its modus operandi.

Their practical, transeasonal pieces – favoured by the likes of Kim Kardashian West, Joel Egerton and Gigi Hadid – slot seamlessly into busy lives (and wardrobes). Here, we introduce the themed capsule collections, which are now available in store and online at Selfridges.

SPORTS

Athleisure to stand the test of time

Christine Centenera and Josh Goot live by the notion that we should always dress well, whatever the occasion. For WARDROBE.NYC’s second release ‘#02 Sports’, the pair have focussed on sportwear, designing figure-sculpturing crop tops and streamlined stretch leggings. The eyelet-studded #02 Sports tracksuit bottoms work perfectly for days (and nights) when you’re after comfort and style simultaneously.

Christine herself was an early adopter and champion of the cycling shorts trend, so for #02 Sports, WARDROBE.NYC has designed their own, putting their own spin on the style using technically bonded textiles with in-built UV protection.

Whether you’ve got into the swing of a new yoga routine, or desire to casualise a dressy ensemble – the pieces from WARDROBE.NYC’s sportwear capsule collection effortlessly deliver put-together polish.

WARDROBE.NYC never makes you work hard to imagine how you might wear its collections – you can just reshuffle the pieces to lean more towards a particular trend or occasion.

STREET

Minimalism made even easier

Since founding the label in 2017 in NYC, the pair have been openly inspired by the energy of the city life – hence naming the brand after America’s fashion capital, a city in which they have both lived and worked. For their third release, Josh and Christine launched #03 Street – an eight-piece capsule underpinned by practicality.

In this collection, standouts include an oversized puffer jacket quilted with goose down and dropped-shoulder cotton hoodies – perfect for those brisk winter days and when you’re tempted to wear your duvet on the way to dinner. Meanwhile, the knitted bodysuit and long-sleeved tees are layers you can base your outfits on all year round.

There is versatility within WARDROBE.NYC’s collections that allows women to build outfits to wear at home, work and dinners out. The high rise stretch woven leggings and the jersey shorts are absolute essentials for building the perfect wardrobe.

TAILORED

Morning-to-midnight dressing

No stranger to back-to-back schedules themselves, Christine Centenera and Josh Goot designed their fifth capsule collection for when you’re rushing around town but still want to look put-together. From the classic tuxedo blazer with its satin shawl lapels to the buckled A-line wrap skirt, WARDROBE.NYC's #05 Tailored is the solution to the desk-to-dinner dilemma. As with all their releases, the pair have put their own stamp on transeasonal classics: here, we have the double-breasted black coat (as much of a winter mainstay as a hot toddy) and the pair’s signature leggings, reinvented with laser-cut split hems. Designed with a buying-better ethos in mind, many of the pieces in this latest collection are consciously crafted using merino wool that’s sustainably certified by the Woolmark company.

Right now, I like the idea of mixing genres and wearing the satin-tipped blazer with the cotton joggers, or the tuxedo trousers with the T-shirt two sizes too big...
