All Eyes on:

This season’s boldest eyewear trends

From Gucci’s futuristic single-piece frames to styles with colourful tinted lenses by Gentle Monster, never underestimate the transformative power of eyewear to channel the new and the unexpected. Here, we invite you to explore the most extraordinary styles of today that have caught the eyes of our buyers, photography and film-making duo Lea and Roberto Colombo, and the guest stylist for our shoot, A$AP Nast.

Miuccia’s masterpieces

Square-framed lenses with delicate details are an instant way to fuse the essence of old-school glamour with a modern freshness. Miuccia Prada’s designs for Prada and Miu Miu feel totally luxurious, with fine gold frames, tortoiseshell panels and reinvented silhouettes. We say: pair them with plain silk pieces and gold-toned jewellery.

Seeing the future

Futuristic one-piece shades turn an everyday outfit into a showstopper, brought to you this season by Gucci, who you can always rely on for accessories with some sartorial pizzazz. Accentuate the sculptural visor fronts by opting for designs with arms in contrasting colours. Wear with sharp suiting or fire up your weekend look by teaming these future-facing shades with vintage T-shirts.

As much as I admire tiny sunglasses on other people, I have to say I breathed a huge sigh of relief when oversized shades came back in again! I just love the glamour of big, dark glasses. Miu Miu has some gorgeous tortoiseshell styles that have a great vintage feel.”

Confident colourways

Known for transforming its store spaces into art installations, Gentle Monster consistently reinvents not just the boundaries of eyewear but of retail experiences. This season, it plays with colour and a double bridge design element, bringing us pieces that make your world brighter (and, of course, here at Selfridges we love seeing the world through yellow lenses!). Eleanor Robinson, our Director of Accessories, believes that tinted lenses “are the perfect solution for those moments when you have to turn the camera on but haven’t had time for mascara”. These confident tinted lenses are a perfect way to illuminate your day.

The classics, refined

Circular styles are famed for their versatility and effortless 60s cool. Ray-Ban’s take has our seal of approval with its gold rims and logo detailing, while Oliver Peoples has updated the circular shape with a higher bridge that brings the design into the current decade. The perfect everyday sunnies, we say.

Silver-screen styles

There’s no easier way to feel like a movie star – even if you’re walking the dog rather than on the Walk of Fame – than to slip on a pair of vintage-inspired sunglasses. This season, we’re fixated on Gucci’s take, featuring textured, angular frames with a pearlescent finish. Look out for the cream, black and brown colourways that will slot in perfectly with your entire summer wardrobe. Now, did someone say Martini?

I’ve long been a fan of sporty shades and Oakley really is the master at that game. Not only are they very on-trend right now, but sporty shades are perfect for all the budding new cyclists among us.

Statement-makers

Certain sunglasses can truly make a statement, perhaps more than any clothing could. The sartorially adventurous should look to Arnette for edgy geometric frames that turn heads, while Valentino’s hexagonal studded frames are the talking point we’ve been searching for. While the most important pairing for these styles is a devil-may-care attitude, we also suggest keeping your outfit in line with your eyewear by opting for bold prints and leather.

Five top tips for buying sunglasses online

1. Opposites attract when it comes to finding the perfect pair to suit your face shape – those with round faces should opt for square frames and vice versa.

2. Oval and cat-eye styles are the best way to balance heart- and diamond-shaped faces.

3. Fine frames in metal, acrylic or tortoiseshell complement small faces.

4. To accentuate cheekbones, choose styles with embellished details.

5. For fearless online shopping, know your measurements and double-check the product details.
