YOUR SUMMER GETAWAY CHECKLIST

Whether it’s a staycation or more exotic shores, we’ve got the new-season outfits, swimwear and even entertainment for that long-awaited getaway.

Words: Thea Bichard

We’re ready – no, we’ve been ready for a while – to get away, seek out some sun and enjoy some extremely well-earned respite. Some of us have the travel lists memorised, Ibiza tickets booked or UK holidays firmly in the calendar; others are planning for day festivals, trips to the beach, camping out, firing up the barbecue or setting a chair and bottle of SPF out on the balcony. For all of the above, we’ve rounded up your checklist of summer essentials…

BIKINIS AND BEACHWEAR

Plans may be unpredictable, so for bikinis and one-pieces, we’ve picked out styles that swerve trends and can easily double up as daywear with a pair of denim shorts. For cover-ups, breeziness is always key – throw on a tiered dress or linen shirt when you’re stopping for lunch or heading out on a hot day. What’s more, we’re keeping in mind the need to protect the beauty of the sea with styles from Marysia and Jets made from recycled plastics such as fishing nets and single-use water bottles.

SUNNY ACCESSORIES FOR WOMEN

Sunglasses? Check. Hat? Check. Sandals? You get the idea – we’ve remembered all those bits you kick yourself for forgetting the minute you’re that bit too far away from home to turn back (we’ve all been there). Ganni’s hiking-inspired sandals (which are made from recycled rubber) and Jacquemus’s fresh-from-the-runway bucket hat have practicality covered. When it comes to pure fun, Eliou’s exclusive-to-Selfridges jewellery has us nostalgic for the beaded necklaces we wore in the 90s.

TRUNKS AND TROPICAL STYLE

Designers must have suspected many of us would be staycationing, so decided to bring the tropics and tourist traps to us. Bright florals from Stüssy and bold graphics on Mami Wata’s recycled surf tops amp up this year’s crop of hot-weather tops. As for standout swimwear? Embrace the short shorts or be playful with pattern.

MEN’S SLIDERS, SNEAKERS AND SUNNIES

We’re sick of shuffling around the house in socks and lacing up the same old pair of trainers. Banish them from your mind and keep things breezy in BAPE and Suicoke DAO’s camo sliders or go a little smarter (but no less balmy) in Bottega Veneta’s leather sandals. And, whatever you’re up to, remember to grab your cap and sunglasses.

PACK IT UP

It’s been a while since we last felt did-I-pick-up-my-passport panic, but we’re still prepared when it comes to packing. Samsonite uses recycled materials for its understated luggage, and Calvin Klein teamed up with Heron Preston for its organic-cotton holdalls. For days at the beach, we’re all for going au naturel, cramming our caps, sun cream and sunglasses into this summer’s roomy straw and raffia totes.

FUN IN THE SUN

Sunbathing, surfing, sausages on the grill, games on the grass… whatever summer fun means for you (and wherever you’ve set up camp), we’ve gathered up all the kit you could need to make the most of the sun. All that’s missing? A killer playlist and something tasty for all those alfresco meals.

Don’t forget the SPF…
