THE SELFRIDGES GUIDE TO:

NEW YORK

And we're off! From secret art installations to the best ice cream in town, discover our rundown of the hottest spots to discover in the city that never sleeps, as told by our creative office - the cultural ears and eyes of Selfridges.

WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE

Walk across the Williamsburg Bridge at sunset. The light at that time of day is amazing and the Manhattan skyline never gets old; you feel like you're walking into the heart of a beautiful beast... and you are.

SOHO SECRETS

Check out the Walter de Maria 'Brooklyn Mile' and 'Earth Room', two permanent art installations in Soho that you would never know were there. They're housed in different locations, but are free and open to the public.

VAN LEEUWEN ICE CREAM

Eat ice cream at Van Leeuwen in East Village. Made in Brooklyn, using fresh natural ingredients, they have the best flavours and really good vegan options, too. Sit on their outdoor benches in the summer and watch the world go by.

101 SPRING STREET

Take a tour of artist Donald Judd's former five-storey residence and studio in Soho, including his bedroom with a huge Dan Flavin installation. The whole house contains more than 500 artworks and was designed entirely by him. It offers a fascinating insight into Judd's life and work.

MARTINIS AT THE CARLYLE

For some uptown old-school glamour, you can't beat the martinis at The Carlyle Hotel. They're second to none, and they come with a little extra on the side because they know that one isn't quite enough but two may be too many. Head up there on a Monday in the Fall and you'll catch Woody Allen playing live jazz with his band, The Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band.

WASHINGTON SQUARE

Sit in Washington Square Park on a warm evening and watch all the street performers and hippies hanging out around the fountain. It's a good slice of New York energy.

STEAK AT LUCIEN

Lucien is a favourite neighbourhood spot – everyone knows your name and the filet mignon au poivre melts in your mouth.
