The Art of Lego

Meet the artists reimagining some of our favourite things in the worlds of fashion and culture, one brick at a time

Words: Jacob Corner

Artists have been seeking out new mediums to represent their muses for centuries – from oil and canvas to graphite on paper – but how about brick on brick? Here, we meet the artists using Lego to reinterpret some of our favourite things in the worlds of style, music and more, while giving you some inspiration to get building your very own masterpieces…

First up, get your blocks here:

Tom Yoo

The sneakerhead sculptor of the Lego world

OK, so you wouldn’t want to play basketball in Tom Yoo’s Lego Jordans, but that doesn’t make them any less impressive. Drawing inspiration from artists like Daniel Arsham and Keith Haring, as well as his identity as a Korean-American, Yoo’s sculptures are a poppy interpretation of streetwear’s most iconic sneakers.

Adly Syairi Ramly

The artist giving Lego some street cred

Adly’s work makes the worlds of Lego and streetwear culture click together like two perfectly matched bricks. He’s done Bathing Aape icon Nigo, he’s done pro skater Alex Olson…maybe he could do our very own Yellow Drop shop next?

Stefano Bolcato

The creative giving Lego a fine-art touch

Fine artist Stefano Bolcato may not use bricks, but Lego remains central to his artistic practice. For him, his paintings are “a tribute to masterworks of art and a new way to continue to play with Lego, so the child in me can live again and again”.

I think we can learn a lot by observing and studying great masters of art history. They are my inspiration.

Alex Eylar

The artist remaking silver-screen classics, brick by brick

Alex Eylar’s brick flicks have all the exquisite mise en scène of a BFI favourite, just with 100 per cent more Danish plastic. His Lego creations are impressive enough on their own, but for us it’s the filmic lighting and camera angles that really breathe life into each scene.

I've always been a movie freak, watching everything I can, and once I started working with Lego I just used what I knew - these projects are each little individual productions, with staging, set design, lighting, and camera angles.
