EVERY OUTFIT TELLS A STORY...

Have you ever owned a pair of fish-flops? Created a pink lamé dress for a party? Found a beloved long-lost ring in Barcelona? We may be spending far less time taking our clothes out into the world, but that leaves more room for savouring the fashion moments that matter. We knocked on the wardrobe doors of a few friends of Selfridges (virtually, of course) to unearth the outfits that prove most memorable – and the stories that go with them – from unusual accessories to sartorial blasts from the past.

Harry Freegard – aka ‘Harrie Bradshaw’ – has quite the CV: he glided down the 2018 Central Saint Martins runway show on a golden scooter, walked Rottingdean Bazaar’s AW18 show ‘wearing’ a cardboard cutout of Naomi Campbell and featured in Tim Walker’s recent exhibition at the V&A Museum, modelling a dress from his mock-macabre graduate collection that read ‘I am dead’.

“This is my beloved pink-velvet and lamé frock that I made in quarantine for a lockdown celebration. I hacked up several of my most cherished dresses and ‘Frankensteined’ them together. I love it – each of those dresses had its own story, from the dress I wore in my graduate show to the dress I was wearing while being held at gunpoint the night I moved to Paris, to every other memorable moment in between. Plus, it’s reversible – not just another party frock! Styled with my most faithful Medea bag, naturally.”

A stylist and consultant based in London, Phoebe has styled the likes of Hailey Bieber, Anne-Marie and Zara Larsson, alongside consulting and styling for brands including adidas and Wolford.

“This is the last thing I wore pre-lockdown – it has just been Lycra and sweats ever since! I wore this look on set, and, as much as I love these shoes, I forgot how heavy they are, so I actually spent most of the day in the model’s slippers. Here, we have my favourite Helmet Lang leather blazer, which I got last year for my birthday. I wear this all the time, so she is a bit worn. I got the Prada skirt on sale when I was out shopping with one of my best pals, Nellie. The tank top is the most flattering tank top I have ever come across and is from Topshop Boutique – I regret not buying 20 of them now! The ‘vintage’ Dior bag is from Serotonin Vintage on Brick Lane – I get a lot from those guys. The shoes are Eytys and the sunglasses are Oakley, which I have left over from the Hailey Bieber x adidas show I styled a few years ago.”

What do Ladies Day at Ascot, the dance floor at former London club night PDA and Extinction Rebellion demonstrations have in common? They’ve all been featured on internet TV series Jason’s Closet, in which its namesake host catches up with the characters (and outfits) in attendance.

“I’m obsessed with this little number I wore to the Love Magazine party earlier this year. I hate to brag, but many people compared me to the icon Prince (my ‘biological father’). On my way to the ladies’, I caught a fabulously sequinned Billy Porter glaring at me, which led to me nervously spilling Malbec all over this Art School dress! Honestly, my memory from that night is so ridiculously warped. Smooches & Smooches, Miss Jason.”

Designer and Tatler Contributing Fashion Editor Mimi Wade is a Fashion East alumna with a fashion print degree from Central Saint Martins and a passion for Old Hollywood – her grandmother (and forever-muse) was a starlet in the 50s and 60s.

“I collaborated with Warner Bros on my AW20 collection and this dress was inspired by Harley Quinn. This meant all the T-shirts I sourced (which were deconstructed to make up the fabric for the dress) needed to make sense for her. I used baseball shirts, Harley-Davidson [T-shirts], patriotic ‘God Bless America’ tees and anything that featured birds of prey. I really enjoy sourcing special vintage pieces and find so much inspiration in movies, so I love this dress, not only because it looks terrific on, but also because of the immense pleasure I had designing it.”

If you’ve flicked through recent issues of 1843, NME Magazine, Notion or Mixmag – and many other publications besides – chances are, you’ll have come across Lewis Munro’s styling work.

“I’m a big fan of jewellery – I mainly buy it from different spots on my travels. My favourite pieces are the ruby ring (top left) and the witch pendant (bottom). I got the ruby ring as a 21st-birthday present, lost it in Barcelona and then recovered it two months later.

Bowling/camp-collar shirts are like my uniform – I have a fair few, but this 2002 Junya Watanabe shirt is definitely one of my favourites. I picked it up from a Japanese auction site for what I thought was a good price. However, I ended up paying double what I [had originally] paid for it in customs and taxes! I still don’t regret it, though.”

“This blazer reminds me of every workday ever. It’s funny how quickly that seems like a distant memory – a blazer just seems comical now. The ceramic head is from FiuFiu Gallery in Shanghai. Is it baffled or surprised? I don’t know, but the expression feels spot on!”

“I wore this on Saturday for my boyfriend’s 30th birthday: a house party for two. The fish-flop-and-sock combination was a bit of a breakthrough – the delivery man said it made his day.

We were bored of awkward Zoom calls so spoke to no one and instead opted to drink Champagne and listen to Aphex Twin until the early hours. The most decadent day of isolation to date.”
