“There are too many hoodies with prints out there,” Raf Simons declared at his Spring 2019 menswear show, sending male models out in jewel-toned satin coats. His collection – along with Helmut Lang, Undercover and Dior’s (among others) – put tailored silhouettes at the top of the menswear agenda again; meanwhile, at the women’s SS20 shows, 80s-style power suits came courtesy of Chloé, Proenza Schouler and JW Anderson. Yes, after seasons of sportswear dominating the runways, tailoring is back in the fashion spotlight – and it feels deliciously counter-intuitive.

So what’s new for AW19?

The once fusty pin-striped suit and rollneck-and-blazer combo have a fresh, go-anywhere elegance; while a kimono jacket or classic Le Smoking-style suit in unexpected textures feel thoroughly modern. Think shimmery satin fabrics, luxurious leather, denim and velvet, playful detailing (prints, crystals, chains), and looser, lightweight cuts.

How to make it work for you

AW19’s tailoring is all about taking classic styles and giving them new, edgier twists – whether it’s unexpected colours and fabrics (hello aubergine velvet at Corneliani, chestnut satin at Tiger at Sweden, dark-chocolate leather at The Kooples) or just adding a hint of the outlandish (a pop of neon here and there). And when it comes to formalwear, who doesn’t love the idea of shaking things up a bit?
