Have we ever been gladder to see spring striding towards us? This point in the year is always prime time to reconsider our style as we shed our wintry layers. In 2021, though (for obvious reasons), we’re well and truly raring for those lighter, brighter days ahead. And who better to get us giddy about the sartorial joys before us than the Selfridges buyers and editors who curate the most exciting brands and style the stories for the season? Read on to hear what they’re looking forward to. And to joggers, we say: jog on.

BEVZA – Knitted cardigan (coming soon) / THE ATTICO – Margot stretch-crepe mini dress / MAISON MARGIELA – Snatched top-handle bag (coming soon) / MISSOMA – Plain Claw 18-carat gold-plated sterling silver vermeil hoop earrings / MONIES – Doha leather and acrylic necklace (coming soon)

FREE AND EASY SPRING STYLE

Designer Womenswear Buyer Rebecca Tinker looks forward to transitional knits and mini skirts

“Dressing for comfort has summarised the last year and isn’t something we’re ready to relinquish. Some of us may be hesitant to walk away from our elasticated waistbands, so the easy knitted separates from the likes of Dion Lee and Bevza will ease us into this transition. After a year of lockdowns, we also want to feel free – free with our bodies and our fashion, embracing barely there tops and dresses with exposed cutouts. We’re all familiar with the playfulness of a mini skirt, and we’ll see this little number make a triumphant return in our wardrobes to mark the release of our sweatpant-covered limbs. For this, we’ll be turning to The Attico to lead the way.”

RECASTING THE CLASSICS

Our Designer Gallery Buyer, Philippa Holden, is looking to exceptional pieces for the everyday

“We’ve all had to reimagine what ‘normal life’ means, and it’s been exciting to see how designers have translated that in their collections by taking familiar classics and finding bold ways to rework them. One style that’s emerged as a trend this spring is the trench coat. John Galliano – a master of experimenting with traditional pieces and bringing them up to date – is responsible for the statement styles at Maison Margiela, which slot effortlessly into your everyday but will still make for a bit of a fashion moment on your daily walk.”

For SS21, we are most excited about brands such as Joah Brown, Marine Serre, Colville, Jacquemus, Prévu, and Dion Lee, who have all artfully evolved the art of lockdown dressing from basic sweats to more considered separates that move effortlessly from day to night.

UPLIFTING ACCESSORIES

Accessories Buying Manager Josie Gardner on the pieces that will spice up your style

“The way I see it, fashion gives us a welcome dose of fantasy to the realities of everyday life, and accessories add the sparkle. When it comes to shoes, Amina Muaddi and Mach & Mach are bringing sexy back, ready for us to say goodbye to slippers and get back out into the world when we can. In the meantime, while we’re not quite ready to drop the casual look, this season’s jewellery will spice up your knits and jerseys: Susan Kaplan’s pre-loved treasures are storied statements. And as for bags? Edas and Jacquemus’s sweetshop colours are just what we need to step boldly into spring.”

NANUSHKA – Evan padded-shoulder vegan-leather blazer / DION LEE – Corset T-shirt / PRÉVU – Relaxed-fit trousers / ISSEY MIYAKE – Graphic-print pleated woven top (worn around waist) / BOTTEGA VENETA – The Chain Pouch medium leather clutch bag / MISSOMA – Ridged Claw 18-carat gold-plated vermeil sterling silver earrings

TINKERING WITH TAILORING

Look to designers redefining smart-casual, says Designer Studio Buyer Ajani Dowey

“As everyone has been getting used to a new way of living, working and socialising, a lot of people want to put a little more effort into outfits for their video calls. There’s nothing wrong with wearing that comfy old hoody again, but there’s something about putting on a ‘proper outfit’ that is an instant mood lifter. Brands are elevating jersey with new shapes (Frankie Shop), using fabrics like vegan leather for easy-to-wear separates (Nanushka everything), and pairing more comfortable pieces with tonal blazers for a super-relaxed vibe (Wardrobe.NYC). It’s all about having the best of both worlds: being comfortable at home but still looking and feeling great.”

BALMAIN – Double-breasted woven jacket / BEYOND RETRO – Pre-loved silk shirt (coming soon) / OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH – High-rise logo-print stretch-twill shorts / BEVZA – Braided satin hair tie / BOTTEGA VENETA – The Bounce chunky-sole leather boots

BOTTEGA TO BOOT

Walk the line between fashion and function, says Senior Fashion Editor Vincent Levy

“Bottega Veneta has done it again, creating another ‘it’ footwear style that’ll have you confidently stomping into the season ahead. Setting the lasting heavy-soled trend back in 2019, the brand's latest twist on the look has a late 90s/early 00s feel that marries military surplus with utmost minimalist luxury. Add to this statement style by pairing with less expected fashion – like light tailoring, or vibrant hues.”
