Have we ever been gladder to see spring striding towards us? This point in the year is always prime time to reconsider our style as we shed our wintry layers. In 2021, though (for obvious reasons), we’re well and truly raring for those lighter, brighter days ahead. And who better to get us giddy about the sartorial joys before us than the Selfridges buyers and editors who curate the most exciting brands and style the stories for the season? Read on to hear what they’re looking forward to. And to joggers, we say: jog on.

Designer Womenswear Buyer Rebecca Tinker looks forward to transitional knits and mini skirts 

“Dressing for comfort has summarised the last year and isn’t something we’re ready to relinquish. Some of us may be hesitant to walk away from our elasticated waistbands, so the easy knitted separates from the likes of Dion Lee and Bevza will ease us into this transition. After a year of lockdowns, we also want to feel free – free with our bodies and our fashion, embracing barely there tops and dresses with exposed cutouts. We’re all familiar with the playfulness of a mini skirt, and we’ll see this little number make a triumphant return in our wardrobes to mark the release of our sweatpant-covered limbs. For this, we’ll be turning to The Attico to lead the way.”

“We’ve all had to reimagine what ‘normal life’ means, and it’s been exciting to see how designers have translated that in their collections by taking familiar classics and finding bold ways to rework them. One style that’s emerged as a trend this spring is the trench coat. John Galliano – a master of experimenting with traditional pieces and bringing them up to date – is responsible for the statement styles at Maison Margiela, which slot effortlessly into your everyday but will still make for a bit of a fashion moment on your daily walk.”

“As everyone has been getting used to a new way of living, working and socialising, a lot of people want to put a little more effort into outfits for their video calls. There’s nothing wrong with wearing that comfy old hoody again, but there’s something about putting on a ‘proper outfit’ that is an instant mood lifter. Brands are elevating jersey with new shapes (Frankie Shop), using fabrics like vegan leather for easy-to-wear separates (Nanushka everything), and pairing more comfortable pieces with tonal blazers for a super-relaxed vibe (Wardrobe.NYC).
