TAKE 5:

MINI BAGS

With Selfridges Director of Accessories Eleanor Robinson

We bring you five key pieces to shop now, chosen by those in the know. In this edition, our Director of Accessories, Eleanor Robinson, takes her pick of this season’s most fun (and fun-sized) mini bags.

One rule for right now? The smaller the bag, the greater the hype. To guide you through our large selection of very little bags, we called on Eleanor’s expertise. She’s a big fan: “the doll-like proportions of these bags are really playful and fun to wear. They can sometimes be so surrealist in their disproportion that it really makes people look twice and often sparks conversation.” As for styling? Go all in: “mini bags tend to come in bold fabrics and prints, which makes them a real mood lifter. I love when people wear multiple mini bags at once, creating a rainbow effect.”

So, leave practicality at home (it’s too big a word to fit in your new bag, anyway) and let’s start the count…

LOEWE

Loewe Paula’s Ibiza Gate leather pouch bag

“Jonathan Anderson’s collaboration with Paula’s Ibiza is pure escapism. I love the whimsical prints that he’s selected from the Paula’s Boutique archives. In particular, I can’t resist this illustration, which is as captivating and beautiful as only a mermaid can be!

The quality of the craftsmanship and the luxurious soft leather contrast with the beachside aesthetic to make this a really chic cross-body bag.”

ROSANTICA

Baby Ghizlan crystal-embellished necklace bag

“Michela Panero is a jeweller and an artist as much as an accessories designer, and this bag perfectly captures the spirit of her brand. Inspired by Greco-Roman jewellery, Panero’s crystal-embellished pouches and card holders are surely the prettiest of all the mini bags out there.

This tiny jewelled piece can be worn as a delicate cross-body, a long necklace, or can simply dangle elegantly between your fingertips. It’s a conversation starter wherever you take it.”

PACO RABANNE

Iconic mini cross-body bag

“I love what Julien Dossena has done to reinterpret the spirit of Paco Rabanne, and this bag is a perfect example of that. It references the 60s space-age style and chainmail fabrication that is so iconic to the brand, but it’s also totally relevant for today. The discs have a soft, fluid movement, and the metal chain sits really comfortably across the body. I love that it instantly dresses up any daytime outfit as well – a simple T-shirt and jeans look great with this.”

JACQUEMUS

Le petit Chiquito mini leather top handle bag

“The ultimate king of mini bags has to be Simon Porte Jacquemus. The Le Chiquito is the most recognisable example of this trend, and really captures the Alice-in-Wonderland-style playfulness of wearing something that is so wildly out of proportion. Yes, there’s barely enough room for your AirPods, but that’s not the point! This bag looks so cute worn as a necklace, wrapped around your wrist or knotted through your belt loops. I want one in every colour.

PRADA

Leather card holder on strap

“A cheeky spin-off within the mini bags trend has been to wear small leather goods as accessories in their own right. This Prada card holder is a great example. The triangle logo is instantly recognisable, and the cross-body strap allows you to wear it proudly across your chest rather than hiding it away in a larger bag.

I think it’s also a more modern way to wear the logo, as opposed to a classic handbag style.”
