WEST GARMENTS - Burberry trench coat (available at Selfridges London)

The story:

West Garments, co-founded by vintage gurus Shaun and Mitchell, grew out of ‘a community of ravers, skaters and ordinary, kind people’ brought together by a love for the highest quality, sought-after modern and vintage pre-loved clothing. “We love the lifestyle of pre-loved clothing,” says Shaun, “finding and meeting new contacts and digging through huge piles [of clothing] to find amazing pieces.”

The key pieces:

Focusing on essential layering from brands that fuse technical fabrics with luxurious signatures (case in point, the classic gabardine Burberry mac, pictured here), West Garments are experts at finding those vintage pieces that transcend fleeting trends, decade upon decade. “The North Face Baltoro collection and Burberry shirt collection hit really hard,” says the pair, “not to mention the pre-2000 Prada pieces.” And with a line-up like that, we’re predicting these styles won’t be around for long…

The philosophy:

“Not only are you slowing down the fast fashion industry by wearing pre-loved clothing, but you are also very likely to be the only other person wearing that item.”

The story:

After working in fashion for over 20 years, Vout Vintage founder Ruth Vout had grown frustrated at the impact of unsustainable industry practices. Utilising her fashion expertise and love for sourcing unique pieces that outlast seasonal trends, Vout Vintage was born. “I used to work as a fashion designer, so I understand a perfect cut and fabric, ensuring the piece will last forever,” says Ruth.

The key pieces:

Vout Vintage’s pieces are a mix of decade-spanning feminine dresses and knitwear, matching two-pieces (see the sporty jacket-and-cap combo, pictured) and classic tailoring sourced from iconic heritage brands like Aquascutum. “Every season, I create a moodboard of pieces that I believe my customer will fall in love with,” says Ruth. “I source from anywhere and everywhere, from Parisian flea markets to home sales and vintage dealers. I love the story and history.”

The philosophy:

“I once bought a collection from a Parisian lady called Eugette in Bognor Regis who was selling all her clothes. It was amazing to go through the decades, from the 50s to the 90s. She cared so much for all her pieces and kept them carefully stored. We can all learn from her, I think.”

Dukes Cupboard - Orange technical jacket (available at Selfridges London)

The story:

Dukes Cupboard was founded out of a love for iconic vintage clothing from the 80s and 90s. “Our shop in Soho has a selection of hand-picked pieces that we’ve sourced globally,” says co-founder Milo Harley. “We’re drawn to brands that have influenced us at some stages in our lives growing up in London.”

The key pieces:

Technical and bright vintage sport jackets and windbreakers from iconic labels such as The North Face, Nike and Prada that feel as fresh now as they did in the 80s. “We’re attracted to the nostalgia of the vintage clothing we sell and the influence these pieces have on the new collections coming out today,” says Milo. “A lot of the relevant streetwear brands today draw inspiration from the types of vintage pieces we sell at Dukes Cupboard.”

The philosophy:

“It’s great to see big companies like Selfridges promoting sustainable fashion and doing their part to help the environment. It’s a great step in the right direction, and we feel proud to be a part of it.”

The story:

Belfast-based vintage store American Madness, founded by Jon-Joe Rogers, started out as a pre-owned clothing shop specialising in logoed pieces from the US. During lockdown, the team developed a line of reconstructed jackets to breathe new life into some old stock. “The project started off as a bit of a lockdown experiment with some jackets that had been lying around the shop for a few months,” says Jon-Joe. “When we posted the photos on Instagram the response blew us away.”

The key pieces:

American Madness’ The Great Outdoors line-up is a unique selection of reworked and colour-blocked Carhartt jackets. “Each reworked piece is made up of four different vintage Carhartt jackets,” explains Jon-Joe. “We deconstruct the original jacket to allow us to resize and reconstruct the jacket back into an entirely new piece. Many of the original Carhartt jackets we use as the base material have serious flaws in them that means that without some sort of creativity they could never be used again and would end up in landfill.”

The philosophy:

“Using a pre-loved piece outdoors, you know it has survived years of real-life testing. It’s also very unlikely that while climbing a mountain or out in the park you will see anyone else in the piece you are wearing!”

BEYOND RETRO - Vest (available at Selfridges London)
${alt}
The story:

Beyond Retro has been a key player in the vintage fashion game for quite some time – the brand was founded in 2002, with pre-loved clothing and accessories stores popping up across the UK and Sweden. “We want to inspire individuality in a sustainable way, so we offer an expansive-yet-curated collection of unique vintage pieces,” explains Managing Director Kate Peters.

The key pieces:

Functional outdoor wear that still feels on trend, but is rooted in durability – from warm quilted fabrics through to utility vests festooned with handy pockets (pictured). “For the RESELFRIDGES Outdoor Edit, we’ve honed in on vintage to wear in nature, so we focussed a lot on our mountaineering styles, jackets and fleeces, puffers and fishing vests,” says Kate. “I personally love utility wear – function with form.”

The philosophy:

“Every piece has a unique story that comes to life again when a new customer discovers it. Vintage makes sustainable shopping fun and creative. I love that thrill of finding that perfect piece, just for you.”

The story:

Trading Desk was founded by school friends Nikita and Alex, with the aim of meeting rising demand for unique, hard-to-find streetwear, and helping to support a circular, more earth-conscious approach to fashion. “Our shop is a fusion of streetwear staples and unique vintage pieces,” says the pair. “Archive and vintage fashion have no bounds. It is all-inclusive.”

The key pieces:

Vintage Olympics windbreakers, collegiate letterman jackets and classic Patagonia fleeces, plus some statement streetwear accessories thrown in for good measure (pictured). “It’s hard to pick a favourite piece [from the collection]!” says Nikita. “We are super excited about the red Supreme Yankees leather baseball jacket, which marked the first official collaboration between Supreme and a Major League Baseball team back in 2015.”

The philosophy:

“By re-using, re-working and re-cycling clothing we can support a move towards a more responsible fashion industry that mitigates against iterations of irresponsible supply chains and over-production. In the face of growing fast fashion and adverse practices, this move is now more important than ever.”
